Living with a serious illness or providing care for a loved one as they near end-of-life, can be very difficult. At Hill House Hospice we are here for you. We provide, at no cost – thanks to the generosity of donors, community partners and government funding – expert medical care and compassionate hearts that focus on quality of life in a home-like setting. At Hill House, people can live life as fully as possible with dignity and respect in the final stage before death.
Hill House Hospice is a special place that is filled with love. Hill House was the first residential hospice in York Region and the second residential hospice to be built in the province of Ontario. Hill House is also a registered charity. Since our founding in 1998, our goal is to lead by example, serving as a model for exemplary residential care in York Region and across Canada.
Hill House provides residential hospice services, delivering palliative care within a comforting home-like setting whereas community hospice offers end-of-life care that can be administered in your own home, a hospital, an assisted living facility or through virtual care options.

The majority of Canadians would prefer to die at home or in a home-like setting. Our home has all the comforts like home. For example, residents do not wear blue gowns; instead they wear specially made nightgowns and polo shirts/pajama pants that can be easily taken on and off. There are no overhead pages or beeping machines; oxygen tanks are stored in our basement and lines are fed up to each room. Rooms can be decorated with your personal belongings including photos, curtains and lamps. A reclining chair is in each bedroom so family members can sleep over.
Hill House Hospice welcomes all residents free of charge. There is no cost to families for our hospice care. Some expenses may arise in relation to the specific care needs of the individual resident and these may include:

Residential hospices in Ontario receive approximately 50% of their operational funding through the provincial government’s Ministry of Health. The rest of our funding needs to be raised through the community.
Annually, Hill House relies on the generosity of our donors, including the family members of residents, friends, service clubs, small businesses and corporations to cover the costs of our much-needed services. We are a registered not-for-profit organization and we can issue charitable tax receipts for donations.

Our aim is to continually educate ourselves and gain a deeper understanding of how our hospice can effectively address the diverse needs of our residents and ensure that our home serves as a welcoming and culturally inclusive and safe space for all.
Our staff speak 10 different languages. Throughout 2023, we are hosting focus group discussions and one-on-one interviews to truly understand what end-of-life care means to the wide mosaic of diverse cultures in our community.
Everyone is welcome to stay at Hill House and we embrace all individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, religion, abilities, gender and sexual orientation. We also respect and follow any religious or dietary preferences that our residents and families request.
Our home operates with a high staff-to-resident ratio. There is at least one nurse and one personal support worker (PSW) working 24 hours a day for every three residents. In contrast, hospital staffing can operate as high as one nurse for every 10 patients. Our ratio also exceeds the current staffing model of most other hospices in the Greater Toronto Area.

“You brought my mom comfort and rid her of her anxiety. Who could ask for more? Your place is lovely. Though she was there for such a short time, it was the best ending she could have. She got the peace she needed in her final moments. Thank you.”
